What can we learn about consumers based on the state that their devices geographically reside in?

As it turns out, plenty.

We analyzed the mobile devices of people who reside in California, Kansas, Mississippi, and New York within the last 90 days and found that the apps people own reveal a lot of regional differences and support some age-old stereotypes. For example:

  • Californians look to recreation and convenience, with apps like Disneyland, Bird, and Weedmaps.
  • Midwest shoppers in Kansas do business with regional brands like Dillons and Sonic, and roadside-related apps like Trucker Path and Texas Roadhouse Mobile.
  • Mississippians are most loyal to lower priced retailers like Walmart Grocery and Dollar General, while owning religion-based apps like King James Bible.
  • New Yorkers are on the move, leaning on food delivery apps like Slice Pizza, or Transit for quick subway navigation.
